Trying out search engine optimisation

I’ve always shied away from search engine optimisation because I’ve never really understood it.  I realise the benefits it can bring but it’s always seemed too complicated to be able to do myself.  However a few weeks ago I decided to give it a shot and thanks to a few decent articles found through Google and attending an excellent Business Gateway workshop I thought I’d give it a shot on my sister-in-laws website www.v-fitness.co.uk, which I had originally put up in the first place.

My strategy included:

  1. Setting up a facebook page for the business which included a link to the website
  2. Adding header tags to each page of the website which included the keywords I was aiming to promote
  3. Adding relevant key phrases to the html code alongside the key words
  4. Registering the business with Google Maps
  5. Registering the website on dmoz
  6. Registering the website on the UK Small Business Directory

Within 3 weeks of doing this I revisited the website, by doing a search for my target keyword phrase “personal trainer Aberdeen” and was surprised to find it in 2nd place on page 1 of Google when previously it hadn’t been in at least the first 10 pages or so.  All from 30 minutes work.  Not bad at all.  It will be interesting to see if it retains it’s place over the next few weeks and months.
